On this day in history:- 1947 – Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl and his crew set sail from Peru on a balsa wood raft named Kon-Tiki. The journey was extensively photographed and filmed, capturing their 101-day voyage across the Pacific to Polynesia.
